HALO-(AC)3
Arctic Air Mass Transformation During Warm Air Intrusions and Marine Cold Air Outbreaks
HALO-(AC)3 was a mission dedicated to Arctic clouds. It was conducted out of Kiruna and Longyearbyen (March/April, 2022) and deployed three aircraft: HALO, Polar 5, and Polar 6. The objectives of the mission were to perform quasi-Lagrange observations of air-mass transformation processes during meridional transports with a particular focus on pronounced warm air intrusions and marine cold air outbreaks, and test the ability of numerical atmospheric models to reproduce the measurements, which then can be applied to investigate the linkages between Arctic amplification and mid-latitude weather. The mission was organized and coordinated by the (AC)3 consortium. For further information see the campaign website HALO-(AC)3.

Our group operated the single particle mass spectrometer ALABAMA on Polar 6 to analyze aerosol particles and coud residuals, in a similar setup as during the ACLOUD campaign in 2017. Cloud residuals are sampled using a counterflow virtual impactor (CVI), operated by S. Mertes (TROPOS, Leipzig). Furthermore, we operate the trace gas measurements (CO, O3, CO2, and H2O) by the JGU Mainz (H. Bozem/P. Hoor).
