BIOSPHERE

To assist our understanding of Tropical rainforest chemistry we performed a measurement campaign in the BIOSPHERE (https://biosphere2.org/) in collaboration with the University of Arizona and the University of Freiburg. In the BIOSPHERE a tropical rainforest has been established within a 2000 m2 surface area greenhouse and we have control over the ambient conditions such as rain. This allows us to investigate how VOC emissions respond to specific to drought or rainfall. By adding isotopically labelled CO2 we were able to assess the ecosystem response to drought and elucidate how chiral monoterpene compounds are emitted. We were also able to track VOC emissions from soil over the course of a drought.
