ACLOUD

(Arctic CLoud Observation Using airborne measurements during polar Day)

The ACLOUD campaign was part of the DFG funded collaborative research center (AC)³. It took place from May 22nd to June 28th, 2017. The AWI Polar 5 and Polar 6 research aircraft were deployed in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. The project was coordinated by A. Ehrlich and M. Wendisch of University Leipzig (LIM).

Participating institutes of (AC)3 were the universities of Leipzig, Bremen, and Cologne, AWI Bremerhaven/Potsdam and TROPOS Leipzig. Associated members of (AC)3 are MPIC Mainz (J. Schneider), JGU Mainz (H. Bozem), and KIT (E. Järvinen). LAMP Clermont-Ferrand participated in ACLOUD as an external partner. Polar 5 was equipped by remote sensing instruments, Polar 6 with in-situ instruments (detailed list of instruments).

We operated our single particle mass spectrometer to measure aerosol particles and cloud residuals. For the latter the instrument was connected to a counterflow virtual impactor (CVI, operated by S. Mertes, TROPOS). In total 19 measurement flights were conducted with Polar 6, plus the ferry flights from Bremen to Longyearbyen and back which were partly used also as measurement flights. All flights were successful and we obtained a very large data set of mass spectra of aerosol particles and cloud residuals in the high Arctic.

At Mainz, this project is a collaboration between the research groups of J. Schneider (MPIC) and P. Hoor (JGU).
